Porsuk ağacı meyvesi çok sayıda insan ve hayvan zehirlenmesine yol açabilmekte ve oldukça toksik etki gösterebilmektedir. Bunu ise yapısında bulundurduğu kardiyotoksik etkilere yol açan takson alkaloidleri (Taksin A ve Taksin B) ile meydana getirmektedir. Taksinler kardiyak myositlerde kalsiyum kanal antagonizma etkisi ile kardiak disritmi oluşturmakta ve ölüme kadar giden bir klinik kötüleşme hali meydana getirmektedir. Porsuk ağacı meyvesi zehirlenmesinin tanısı, genellikle sindirim sisteminde bitki parçalarının bulunarak tanımlanmasıyla konulmaktadır. Son dönemlerde teknolojik gelişmeler ve toksikolojik tanı yöntemlerinin gelişmesiyle birlikte daha düşük dozlarda bile olsa metabolitlerin tespiti sonucunda tanısı klinik şüphe ile daha kolay bir şekilde konulmaya başlanmıştır.
